Storm and water damage restoration help in Tillmans Corner

Tillmans Corner, the largest census-designated place in Alabama, sits just southwest of Mobile along I-10, close enough to the Gulf that hurricanes from Katrina to Zeta have swept across its roofs and yards.

Curbside pile of soaked drywall, flooring and furniture outside raised coastal homes after a hurricane

Mobile County has been part of sixteen federal major disaster declarations since 2000. Most were tropical: Katrina, Gustav, Ike-related flooding, Tropical Storm Ida, Isaac, Nate, Michael, Sally and Zeta. Severe storms with tornadoes and flooding in 2011, 2014 and 2023 round out the list.

South Mobile County weather: hurricanes, wind and rain

This unincorporated community borders the city of Mobile to the northeast and Theodore to the southeast, with Interstate 10 forming the line with Theodore. It sits at about 161 feet and has a humid subtropical climate with hot, sticky summers and mild to cool winters.

When Hurricane Zeta crossed the region on October 28-29, 2020, the National Weather Service reported tropical-storm-force winds across most of the county, a 91 mph gust at Mobile Regional Airport, and numerous homes with roof damage or fallen trees. A gauge 4 miles west of Tillmans Corner caught 2.34 inches of rain, while surge reached 7 to 9 feet near Bayou La Batre and Coden on the coast.

Where water gets in: roofs, AC systems and plumbing

Wind-driven rain is the leading cause of interior water damage here. A hurricane or strong thunderstorm can lift shingles, crack vent boots and push water past window seals, and the problem may not show until a ceiling sags. Long cooling seasons also mean many leaks start at clogged condensate lines and overflowing drain pans.

Inside the home, supply lines to sinks, toilets and ice makers, along with water heaters, account for many sudden leaks. A typical approach to water damage restoration in Tillmans Corner is to stop the leak, extract water, and dry the structure with air movers and dehumidifiers while checking progress with moisture meters. FEMA records show Mobile County was included in 16 major disaster declarations for weather or fire events from 2000 through 2026 (11 hurricane, 5 severe storm, by FEMA incident type). Declarations are made at the county level, so they do not mean every neighborhood in Tillmans Corner was affected. The most recent:

House fires, soot and post-storm hazards

Kitchen and electrical fires are the most common, but extended outages after hurricanes bring added risk from generators, fuel cans and candles. Smoke can travel through attic spaces and ductwork, coating rooms well away from the fire.

Contractors commonly start by securing the house and removing debris, then drying water left from firefighting before cleaning soot and deodorizing. Our overview of fire damage restoration and the soot removal page cover the usual process step by step.

After the hurricane: tarping, trees and floodwater

Once a storm passes, roof tarping, tree removal and board-up usually take priority to stop more rain getting in. Interior extraction and drying follow, ideally before the heat lets mold start.

Heavy rain can also overwhelm drainage ditches and low spots, sending water into garages and living areas. Water that enters from outside is treated as contaminated, so wet carpet, pad, insulation and the lower part of drywall are typically cut out. See hurricane damage cleanup and our page on storm water damage restoration.

Mold after Gulf storms and summer humidity

Near the Gulf, humidity stays high much of the year. After a storm, when power may be out and air conditioning is off, wet drywall and flooring can begin growing mold in a day or two.

The EPA advises using professionals for mold patches bigger than roughly 10 square feet and for any growth after contaminated water. Containment, HEPA air scrubbing and removal of unsalvageable materials are standard practice, as our mold remediation guide explains.
