Known as the Jubilee City for the Mobile Bay events that wash crabs and shrimp onto its shoreline, Daphne is the largest city in Baldwin County. Its houses, from the streets around Olde Towne to newer subdivisions east of I-10, contend with tropical storms, summer downpours and constant humidity.
Please note that Fire & Water Energy is a referral service, not a restoration firm. When you call (866) 937-3230, we will try to connect you with an independent restoration contractor serving Daphne and the eastern shore, though no one's availability can be promised. Our how it works page walks through a typical call, and the referral disclosure covers the fine print.
Mobile Bay hurricanes and the eastern shore's heavy rainfall
Baldwin County has been part of more federal disaster declarations since 2000 than most Alabama counties, including Hurricanes Ivan (2004), Dennis and Katrina (2005), Gustav (2008), Tropical Storm Ida (2009), Isaac (2012), Nate (2017) and Sally (2020). Ivan came ashore near Gulf Shores as a Category 3 storm and caused widespread flooding and damage in Daphne, while Katrina's effects here were much milder.
Hurricane Sally made landfall at Gulf Shores on September 16, 2020, crawling along at under 5 mph. The National Weather Service in Mobile reported 15 to 30 inches of rain across Baldwin County, including more than 12 inches southwest of nearby Fairhope, and almost the entire county lost power. Even without a hurricane, the city averages about 68 inches of rain a year, with July the wettest month.
Water damage restoration on the eastern shore: common causes
Wind-driven rain is a frequent source of water damage restoration in Daphne, pushing water past window seals, soffits and roof flashing during tropical storms. Summer thunderstorms can drop several inches in an hour, overwhelming gutters and low spots in yards.
Inside, air conditioners run most of the year, and clogged condensate lines or rusted drain pans are a common cause of ceiling stains. Slab leaks, water heater failures and supply line bursts add to the list. A reputable contractor will usually stop the source, perform water extraction, and dry the structure with dehumidifiers and air movers while monitoring moisture. Our water damage repair page covers rebuilding.
Federal disaster declarations that included Baldwin County
FEMA records show Baldwin County was included in 14 major disaster declarations for weather or fire events from 2000 through 2026 (9 hurricane, 5 severe storm, by FEMA incident type). Declarations are made at the county level, so they do not mean every neighborhood in Daphne was affected. The most recent:
- 2020 – Hurricane Sally (DR-4563)
- 2017 – Hurricane Nate (DR-4349)
- 2014 – Severe Storms, Tornadoes, Straight-line Winds, and Flooding (DR-4176)
- 2012 – Hurricane Isaac (DR-4082)
- 2011 – Severe Storms, Tornadoes, Straight-line Winds, and Flooding (DR-1971)
- 2009 – Tropical Storm Ida (DR-1866)

Fire, soot and smoke odor in a humid coastal climate
Fire damage brings soot and smoke residue that spread through ductwork, plus water from firefighting. In Gulf Coast humidity, wet materials left after a fire can grow mold quickly if they are not dried promptly.
Contractors commonly handle board-up, debris removal, drying, then cleaning of surfaces and odor treatment. Read our pages on fire damage cleanup and smoke odor removal. Generators used during hurricane outages are a fire and carbon monoxide hazard; run them outside and away from windows.
Storm surge, flooding and post-hurricane cleanup
When a hurricane approaches, surge in Mobile Bay combined with heavy rain can leave water with nowhere to drain, as Sally showed across Baldwin County. Low-lying property near the bay shore is most exposed, while homes on higher ground to the east are more likely to see wind and tree damage.
Floodwater is considered contaminated, so wet drywall, insulation and flooring are usually removed. After the storm passes, roof tarping and tree removal come first. For the eastern shore, our hurricane damage cleanup guide pairs well with the flood cleanup overview.
Gulf Coast humidity and mold remediation
With mean daily highs near 78°F over the year and heavy rainfall, mold is a constant concern in Daphne homes. It often grows inside walls after a slow leak, on the backs of cabinets and in closets where air does not circulate.
The EPA advises calling a professional for mold patches larger than about 10 square feet. Ask any mold remediation contractor how they will contain the area, remove affected material and fix the moisture source.
Before and after a storm: safety for Daphne residents
- Follow evacuation orders and hurricane advisories from Baldwin County officials and the National Weather Service in Mobile.
- Call 911 for injuries, fire, gas leaks or downed power lines.
- Do not walk or drive through floodwater; it may hide debris, sewage or live wires.
- Photograph damage before cleanup and keep receipts for tarps and supplies.
- Contact your insurer or agent; coverage depends on your policy, and wind and flood are often handled separately.

Daphne restoration FAQs
How much did Hurricane Sally affect Daphne?
Sally's landfall at Gulf Shores in September 2020 brought 15 to 30 inches of rain across Baldwin County and near-countywide power outages. The NWS Mobile report does not list a Daphne-specific total, but nearby Fairhope recorded more than 12 inches. Many homes in the county flooded.
Is wind damage or flood damage the bigger risk in Daphne?
Both are possible. Property near the bay is more exposed to surge and drainage problems, while higher ground east of the shore sees more wind and tree damage. Homeowners policies and flood policies usually handle these differently, so check both with your agent.
Why does mold show up so quickly after a leak here?
The eastern shore's warm, humid air keeps materials damp, and mold can start growing within a day or two. Drying wet materials fast and running dehumidifiers does more to prevent it than any spray or cleaner.
Does Fire & Water Energy send crews after hurricanes?
No. We do not have crews; we try to connect callers with independent contractors. After a major storm, demand is high and availability may be limited. Check any contractor's insurance and ask whether technicians hold IICRC certification.
