Known since 1921 as the Home of the Ruby Red grapefruit, Mission spreads across southern Hidalgo County at about 141 feet of elevation, with the Rio Grande forming its southern edge. McAllen lies to the east, Palmview to the west and Palmhurst to the north. Flat land and sudden subtropical downpours mean street and home flooding can develop with little warning.
Fire & Water Energy is a phone referral service with no crews or equipment. When you call (866) 937-3230, we will try to point you to an independent restoration contractor serving Mission, Alton, McAllen and other western Hidalgo County communities, depending on who is available. The how it works page and our referral disclosure cover the details.
The March 2025 flood and other Valley weather threats
In late March 2025, slow-moving storms brought what the National Weather Service in Brownsville called historic flooding from McAllen to Harlingen. McAllen measured 9.13 inches over three days, frontage roads all the way west to this city were flooded and closed through March 28, with up to four feet of water in the worst spots, and at least a thousand buildings across the region took on water. The City of Mission had already issued a local disaster declaration on March 4, 2025, extended on March 10.
FEMA major disaster declarations covering Hidalgo County since 2000 include that 2025 flood, Hurricanes Rita (2005), Dolly (2008), Alex (2010) and Beryl (2024), the 2021 Severe Winter Storms, a 2006 wildfire threat, and storm or flooding events in 2015, 2016, 2018 and 2019.
Leaks and plumbing failures common in local homes
In a hot climate where air conditioning runs most of the year, condensate overflow is one of the most frequent indoor water problems, along with failed water heaters, supply hoses and slab plumbing. The 2021 winter storm also showed that pipes in attics and exterior walls can split when a rare hard freeze arrives.
Water damage restoration in Mission generally starts with finding and stopping the source, then extraction, moisture mapping and controlled drying. Read about emergency water removal and water damage repair for the usual sequence.
Federal disaster declarations that included Hidalgo County
FEMA records show Hidalgo County was included in 13 major disaster declarations for weather or fire events from 2000 through 2026 (4 flood, 4 hurricane, 3 severe storm, 1 severe ice storm, 1 fire, by FEMA incident type). Declarations are made at the county level, so they do not mean every neighborhood in Mission was affected. The most recent:
- 2025 – Severe Storms and Flooding (DR-4871)
- 2024 – Hurricane Beryl (DR-4798)
- 2021 – Severe Winter Storms (DR-4586)
- 2019 – Severe Storms and Flooding (DR-4454)
- 2018 – Severe Storms and Flooding (DR-4377)
- 2016 – Severe Storms and Flooding (DR-4272)

Fire, smoke and soot restoration
Hidalgo County was part of FEMA's 2006 Extreme Wildfire Threat declaration, and dry spells between rain events can raise outdoor fire risk across the county. Inside the home, cooking, electrical overloads and dryers remain the most common starting points.
Restoration contractors usually secure the property, remove debris that cannot be saved, test soot so the right cleaning method is used and deodorize the structure and ductwork. Guides on fire damage restoration and smoke damage cleanup go into the process.
Cleaning up after flash floods and hurricanes
The 2025 event showed how fast streets, garages and ground floors can fill when several inches fall in a couple of hours. Outdoor floodwater carries sewage, fuel and debris, so contractors treat it as contaminated: wet carpet and pad come out, drywall is usually cut above the water line, and framing is disinfected before drying.
Hurricanes add wind damage that may need roof tarping or board-up first. Our flood damage restoration and hurricane damage cleanup guides explain the steps.
Preventing mold once the water is gone
Warm, humid weather after a storm gives mold an easy start on soaked drywall, baseboards and furniture, often in as little as a day or two. Running fans alone may not be enough if the moisture is trapped inside walls.
EPA guidance says homeowners can typically clean mold under roughly 10 square feet after correcting the moisture problem. Bigger areas, growth after floodwater or mold in the air conditioning system usually call for mold removal by a contractor.
What to do first after damage in Mission
- Call 911 for fires, injuries, gas leaks or downed lines.
- Sign up for E-Dalgo emergency alerts from Hidalgo County Emergency Management and watch the City of Mission website for local declarations.
- Avoid flooded frontage roads and underpasses.
- Shut off water at the main for plumbing breaks and stay away from wet outlets.
- Take dated photos and keep receipts. Flood damage is often insured separately from other losses, so check your policy with your agent.

Mission restoration FAQs
How bad was the March 2025 flooding around Mission?
The National Weather Service described it as historic. Frontage roads between Harlingen and Mission were closed through March 28 with up to four feet of water in places, and at least a thousand buildings across the area had water inside.
Does living near the Rio Grande raise my flood risk?
The river forms the city's southern boundary, but much of the recent damage came from intense rain overwhelming streets and drainage rather than the river itself. Check flood maps and talk to your agent about flood coverage either way.
Where do I get emergency alerts in western Hidalgo County?
Hidalgo County Emergency Management runs the E-Dalgo alert system. The City of Mission also posts declarations and notices on its website.
Should I worry about frozen pipes in Mission?
Hard freezes are rare, but Hidalgo County was included in the 2021 Severe Winter Storms declaration. Insulating exposed outdoor and attic piping is a low-cost precaution.
Does Fire & Water Energy have its own workers in the Valley?
No. We are a referral service. We try to connect callers with independent contractors serving the area, and those businesses quote and perform the work themselves.
