Storm, fire and water damage recovery in Mount Juliet

Mount Juliet lies between two large reservoirs, Old Hickory Lake to the north and Percy Priest Lake to the south, in the western end of Wilson County.

Large tree fallen onto the roof of a single-story house after a storm

Wilson County's largest city has multiplied roughly sevenfold since 1990, from about 5,400 residents to more than 39,000 in 2020. Most homes are recent, but the March 2020 tornado proved that no neighborhood here is out of reach of severe weather.

Fire & Water Energy handles referrals only; cleanup and repairs are done by other companies. The 2020 tornado and Wilson County's storm record

The National Weather Service in Nashville reports that the tornado of March 3, 2020, reached its peak, high-end EF-3 strength in the Mount Juliet area, where it grew to about 0.9 miles wide on a path that ran more than 60 miles into Smith County. Strong EF-3 damage leveled homes in the Catalpa Drive and Clearview Drive neighborhoods, West Wilson Middle School and Stoner Creek Elementary were badly damaged, and warehouses near Golden Bear Parkway and Eastgate Boulevard were flattened. Three people died in the city.

FEMA also included Wilson County in declarations for the May 2010 storms and flooding (DR-1909), for storm and tornado events in 2003, 2021, 2022 and 2025, and for the 2026 severe winter storm.

Everyday leaks in a fast-built suburb

About 15,000 housing units stood in the city in 2020, the bulk of them built during the last three decades. In houses of this age, washing machine hoses, water heaters reaching 10 to 15 years old, icemaker and dishwasher lines, and upstairs bathrooms are common culprits. Pipes in garages or along outside walls can freeze during a severe cold snap like the one behind the 2026 declaration.

Should you need water damage restoration in Mount Juliet, a typical contractor will find and stop the leak, extract water, check the subfloor and wall cavities with meters and dry everything to a documented standard. Federal disaster declarations that included Wilson County

FEMA records show Wilson County was included in 7 major disaster declarations for weather or fire events from 2000 through 2026 (3 severe storm, 3 tornado, 1 winter storm, by FEMA incident type). Bringing a home back from fire and smoke

Kitchen and electrical fires are common starting points, and smoke rarely stays put. In two-story homes, it rises into upstairs bedrooms and attic spaces and can work into insulation.

A restoration company will often secure the structure, remove burned materials, clean soot from walls, ceilings and belongings, and run filtration and odor treatments. Look over smoke damage cleanup and fire damage cleanup to understand each phase.

Wind, debris and rain intrusion after severe storms

After a tornado or straight-line wind event, homes may have roof sections missing, broken windows and trees on the structure. Contractors usually start with emergency board-up and tarping so rain cannot finish what the wind started, then remove wet insulation and drywall.

Heavy rain can also send runoff toward foundations and garages, and water arriving from outdoors is treated as contaminated during cleanup. You will find more on storm damage cleanup and property damage reconstruction.

Watching for mold after leaks and storm repairs

Middle Tennessee summers are warm and humid, so wet materials left in place for more than a day or two invite mold. Delayed roof repairs after storms are a frequent cause, as are slow leaks under sinks and behind dishwashers.

The EPA's rule of thumb: under about 10 square feet, a homeowner can usually clean it, if the moisture source is fixed. Bigger areas, or mold after contaminated water, warrant a professional with containment. See our overview of mold removal.

Mount Juliet safety steps when damage hits

  • Shelter in an interior room on the lowest floor during tornado warnings.
  • Call 911 after a storm or fire if anyone is hurt or you smell gas, and stay away from fallen lines.
  • Shut the main water valve for any plumbing failure.
  • Before tearing anything out, capture photos of every wall, floor and possession that got wet or burned, and start an inventory.
  • Report the loss to your insurance carrier. Terms differ from policy to policy, so check with your agent about what applies.

Mount Juliet restoration FAQs

How strong was the 2020 tornado in Mount Juliet?

The National Weather Service says it reached high-end EF-3 intensity in the city, with a width of about 0.9 miles. Three people were killed locally, and two schools were severely damaged.

Are homes near Old Hickory or Percy Priest Lake at risk of flooding?

Both are managed reservoirs, but properties at low elevation or near feeder streams can still see water in extreme rain. Checking the FEMA flood map for your lot, then talking with your agent about separate flood insurance, is a sensible step.

What storms have hit Wilson County since 2000?

FEMA lists seven declarations, including storms with tornadoes in 2003, 2020, 2021, 2022 and 2025, the 2010 flood and the 2026 winter storm.

Which parts of a 2000s-era Mount Juliet house tend to fail first?

Water heaters, supply hoses, toilet fill valves and roof flashing are typical. Replace hoses on a schedule and have the water heater checked as it ages.

Who does the work if I call your number?

Whichever independent restoration company accepts the job, assuming one can take it. Fire & Water Energy only provides referrals and does not perform restoration.
