This Jackson County city on the eastern shore of Biloxi Bay is known for a historic downtown under live oaks, for the art of Walter Anderson and for being the site of the 1699 French settlement at Fort Maurepas. Nearly a quarter of its area is water, and the county has been named in thirteen federal disaster declarations since 2000.
Fire & Water Energy connects callers with contractors; we are a referral service and do no restoration work. Call (866) 937-3230 and we will try to find an independent restoration contractor who serves Ocean Springs, subject to local availability. How we operate is set out in our referral disclosure.
Biloxi Bay storms, from Camille to Ida
Hurricane Camille in 1969 damaged the bridge linking the city to Biloxi. On August 29, 2005, Katrina severely damaged Ocean Springs, wiping out many shoreline buildings, the yacht club and the wooden replica of Fort Maurepas, while a surge of about 28 feet destroyed the Biloxi Bay Bridge entirely. A replacement opened in stages between November 2007 and April 2008.
Jackson County's other tropical declarations since 2000 cover Isidore (2002), Ivan (2004), Dennis (2005), Gustav (2008), Isaac (2012), Nate (2017), Zeta (2020) and Ida (2021). Severe storms with tornadoes or flooding prompted declarations in 2009 and 2023, and a winter storm did in 2026.
Summer thunderstorms and household leaks
Much of the rain falls from late spring through early autumn in afternoon and evening thunderstorms, with June and July each topping 7 inches on average. That pattern finds every weak spot in roofs, skylights and window flashing. Inside, air conditioners work hard through those months, and overflowing condensate pans in attics are a common cause of ceiling damage.
Other frequent problems include failed water heaters, cracked supply lines and slab leaks under tile. People searching for water damage restoration in Ocean Springs can expect a contractor to stop the source, extract, dry the structure with monitored equipment and repair only after readings return to normal. Attic drips are covered under ceiling water damage repair, and standing water under water extraction.
Federal disaster declarations that included Jackson County
FEMA records show Jackson County was included in 13 major disaster declarations for weather or fire events from 2000 through 2026 (9 hurricane, 3 severe storm, 1 winter storm, by FEMA incident type). Declarations are made at the county level, so they do not mean every neighborhood in Ocean Springs was affected. The most recent:
- 2026 – Severe Winter Storm (DR-4899)
- 2023 – Severe Storms, Straight-line Winds, and Tornadoes. (DR-4727)
- 2021 – Hurricane Ida (DR-4626)

Fire and smoke in older and coastal homes
Older cottages and houses near downtown often have wood siding, wood floors and attic spaces that let smoke travel widely. After hurricanes, portable generators and candles become everyday tools, which makes keeping generators outdoors and away from windows especially important.
Fire restoration usually starts with securing the building and removing debris, then drying water left by firefighters, cleaning soot from each material and deodorizing. Our fire damage restoration guide covers those steps, and smoke odor removal explains why odor can linger in humid air.
Surge, bay flooding and hurricane cleanup
Floodwater that rises from Biloxi Bay or pools after a tropical downpour carries salt, sewage and debris, so it is handled as Category 3 water. Contractors commonly remove saturated drywall, insulation and flooring, clean and disinfect framing, and then dry. Salt left in materials can keep pulling in moisture if it is not washed off.
Wind damage to roofs and fallen live oak limbs often need attention before drying can begin. Look at storm water damage restoration and hurricane damage cleanup to see how that work is usually sequenced.
Mold and the coastal wet season
With about 65 inches of annual rain and steamy summers, wet building materials in Ocean Springs can sprout mold in as little as a day or two. Look closely at closets on outside walls, under sinks, along baseboards and on attic sheathing after any leak. EPA guidance points to trained help for areas larger than about 10 square feet. A careful remediation company will isolate the area, run HEPA air filtration, remove what cannot be cleaned and correct the moisture source; more on mold removal.
First moves for Ocean Springs homeowners
- Call 911 for fires, gas smells, injuries or a structure that may collapse.
- Follow Jackson County evacuation orders and wait for clearance before returning after a storm.
- Do not wade into floodwater or enter rooms where water may be touching outlets or wiring.
- Photograph damage room by room and keep receipts for tarps, fans and other emergency purchases.
- Call your insurance agent or carrier; wind and flood are often written separately on the coast, and coverage depends on your policy.

Ocean Springs restoration FAQs
What did Hurricane Katrina do to Ocean Springs?
Wikipedia reports that Katrina severely damaged the city in 2005, destroying many shoreline buildings, the yacht club and the Fort Maurepas replica. Its surge of about 28 feet also destroyed the Biloxi Bay Bridge to Biloxi.
Which months bring the heaviest rain on Biloxi Bay?
June and July are the wettest months, each averaging a little over 7 inches, with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. October is usually the driest. Hurricane season overlaps the wet months, so roof and gutter checks in spring are worthwhile.
Can I clean up bay floodwater myself?
Small amounts may be manageable with boots, gloves and eye protection, but floodwater is considered contaminated. Porous items it soaked are usually discarded, and larger jobs are typically handled by contractors with proper drying and disinfecting equipment.
Why does my house smell musty after a summer leak?
A musty odor usually means hidden moisture and possible mold behind walls or under flooring. Coastal humidity slows natural drying, so have the area checked with a moisture meter rather than covering the smell.
Is Fire & Water Energy a contractor on the coast?
No. We have no workers or offices in Jackson County. We try to connect callers with independent contractors, who set their own schedules, prices and terms.
