Valley became a city in 1980 when the mill villages of Fairfax, Langdale, River View and Shawmut joined together. It sits in southeastern Chambers County on the Georgia state line, part of a Greater Valley Area that also includes Lanett and West Point, Georgia.

Chattahoochee country: rain, river and severe weather
The city lines the western bank of the Chattahoochee. Upstream, the Army Corps of Engineers operates West Point Dam, authorized under the Flood Control Act of 1962 and finished in the mid-1970s, partly to hold back high water on the lower river. Wikipedia notes that flood-producing storms in the basin are most likely in winter and early spring.
Valley averages about 52 inches of precipitation a year, with July highs near 91°F and January lows around 34°F. Chambers County was included in two federal declarations for severe storms, straight-line winds and tornadoes in 2023 (DR-4684 and DR-4710), plus storms and flooding in 2020 (DR-4546) and the 2011 outbreak (DR-1971).
Indoor water damage in mill-village homes and newer houses
Valley's housing mixes former mill-village neighborhoods with newer construction, and leaks show up in both. Common sources include worn supply lines, water heaters near the end of their life, clogged AC condensate lines in the long, humid summers and roof leaks after a strong thunderstorm. On the coldest January nights, pipes in crawl spaces can freeze and split.
For water damage restoration in Valley, a contractor will usually remove standing water, take out wet carpet pad and lower drywall if moisture has wicked upward, and run drying equipment while logging readings. Review water damage restoration and burst pipe water damage to see what each step involves.
Federal disaster declarations that included Chambers County
FEMA records show Chambers County was included in 8 major disaster declarations for weather or fire events from 2000 through 2026 (6 severe storm, 2 hurricane, by FEMA incident type). Declarations are made at the county level, so they do not mean every neighborhood in Valley was affected. The most recent:

After a fire: smoke, soot and water from the hoses
House fires bring a second round of damage once they are out: soot carried through the ductwork and gallons of water from firefighting soaking floors and walls. Wood-framed homes with older wiring can be especially hard to clean thoroughly.
Contractors typically stabilize the site with board-up and tarps, haul out debris, dry everything that got wet and then tackle soot and odor room by room, often cleaning contents separately. Our smoke damage cleanup and fire damage cleanup pages describe these stages in plain language.
Tornado, wind and flood cleanup in Chambers County
The 2023 declarations underline how often severe storms reach this corner of Alabama. Common damage includes trees on roofs, missing shingles, broken windows and rain pouring into attics and upper rooms. Quick tarping and board-up keep a bad situation from getting worse.
When outside water gets in, whether from the river, a creek or a flooded street, it should be handled as contaminated. Porous materials are generally removed and the structure is sanitized and dried before repairs. See how contractors approach storm damage cleanup and flood damage restoration.
Mold risk in east Alabama humidity
Hot, humid summers make wet building materials a mold risk within a day or two. After any leak, check crawl spaces, closets on outside walls and the underside of sinks, and keep air moving.
EPA guidance advises using a professional when mold covers more than about 10 square feet. A proper job contains the area, removes damaged materials, cleans and dries what is left, and fixes the moisture problem. Read more under mold removal.
What Valley residents should do first
- Call 911 for fire, injuries, gas leaks or downed power lines.
- Do not wade through floodwater that may be electrified or contaminated.
- Shut off the water main if a pipe has burst.
- Follow National Weather Service alerts and Chambers County officials for warnings and shelter information.
- Photograph damage before you move or toss anything, and keep receipts.
- Contact your insurer or agent quickly; coverage depends on your policy and flood is often excluded.

Valley restoration FAQs
Does the Chattahoochee River flood in Valley?
The river runs along the city's eastern edge, and West Point Dam upstream was built partly for flood control. Flood-producing storms in the basin are most likely in winter and early spring. If you live near the river or a tributary, ask your agent whether a separate flood policy makes sense.
What recent disasters have affected Chambers County?
The county was included in two 2023 FEMA declarations for severe storms, straight-line winds and tornadoes, and in a 2020 declaration for severe storms and flooding. Earlier declarations include the 2011 tornado outbreak and Hurricanes Ivan and Dennis.
Can a contractor from Lanett or West Point, Georgia, work in Valley?
Many independent contractors serve the whole Greater Valley Area, and Lanett is only about 4 miles away. Licensing can differ across the state line, so confirm the company is permitted to work in Alabama. Call (866) 937-3230 and we will try to find someone available.
Are you the contractor who will come out?
No. Fire & Water Energy makes referrals to independent companies. Check licensing, insurance and IICRC certification with any contractor before work begins.
