Since January 2014, Macon and Bibb County have shared one consolidated government. The north side of town rolls over hills, while the south side flattens out toward the coastal plain, so the way water behaves after a storm can be very different depending on where you live.
Fire & Water Energy is a referral line rather than a repair company. Phone (866) 937-3230 and we will try to link you with an independent restoration contractor serving Macon-Bibb County. Alberto, a parkway tornado and other local weather history
Tropical Storm Alberto in 1994 is the benchmark disaster. The storm came ashore in Florida, stalled, and dumped about 24 inches of rain on Macon, causing major flooding; July 5, 1994 remains the city's wettest day on record. In a more typical year, precipitation totals about 45.7 inches.
Tornadoes are the other recurring threat. On May 11, 2008, an EF2 tornado touched down near Lizella, crossed Lake Tobesofkee and tracked about 18 miles into the city, with the heaviest damage along Eisenhower Parkway and Pio Nono Avenue. Bibb County's FEMA declarations since 2000 cover Tropical Storm Frances (2004), severe storms and tornadoes (2008) and Hurricane Irma (2017). Freezes are possible from mid-October to mid-April, though snow averages under an inch a year.
Water damage repair in older and newer Macon homes
Macon is known for antebellum and Victorian landmarks such as the Hay House and the Cannonball House, and many surrounding homes are decades old, with crawlspaces, aging supply lines and cast-iron drains. Long, humid summers also mean air conditioners run hard, and a clogged condensate line can quietly soak a ceiling or subfloor. Occasional hard freezes still split exposed pipes.
A contractor providing water damage restoration in Macon will commonly extract water, take moisture readings and dry the structure before moving on to repairs like drywall, flooring and trim. Our water damage repair and water extraction pages describe those phases.
Federal disaster declarations that included Bibb County
FEMA records show Bibb County was included in 3 major disaster declarations for weather or fire events from 2000 through 2026 (2 hurricane, 1 severe storm, by FEMA incident type). Declarations are made at the county level, so they do not mean every neighborhood in Macon was affected. The most recent:
- 2017 – Hurricane Irma (DR-4338)
- 2008 – Severe Storms and Tornadoes (DR-1761)
- 2004 – Tropical Storm Frances (DR-1560)

After a house fire: soot, odor and water
A fire leaves three problems at once: charred materials, soot that spreads well beyond the burned room, and water from firefighting. In older homes with plaster walls and wood trim, smoke odor can be especially persistent, and heirloom furniture or documents may need specialized cleaning.
Reputable fire restoration companies typically secure the home, inventory contents, clean or remove soot-damaged surfaces and treat lingering odor. Read about fire damage cleanup and soot removal for what that work involves.
Tornado debris and Ocmulgee-area flooding
Severe thunderstorms can bring straight-line winds and tornadoes that drop trees onto roofs, while tropical systems moving inland can stall and cause flash flooding, as Alberto showed. Low areas on the flatter south side can collect runoff during long rain events.
Floodwater may carry sewage and chemicals, so wear boots and gloves and avoid contact where possible. Independent contractors doing storm damage cleanup and flood cleanup generally tarp roofs, remove soaked materials, sanitize and dry before reconstruction begins.
Middle Georgia humidity and mold growth
Hot, sticky summers give mold everything it needs once materials stay wet. Crawlspaces, bathrooms with weak exhaust fans and walls behind leaking appliances are typical problem areas.
The EPA advises that small areas under roughly 10 square feet can often be cleaned by the homeowner, but larger patches or growth in heating and cooling systems usually call for professional mold removal. Ask whether a contractor follows IICRC S520 and how they will address the moisture source.
