Restoring Alvin homes after floods, leaks and fires

In July 1979 Tropical Storm Claudette stalled over Alvin and dropped 43 inches of rain in 24 hours, at the time the heaviest one-day total ever measured in the United States.

Alvin lies in northern Brazoria County at roughly 46 feet above sea level, about 25 miles from downtown Houston by State Highway 35 and around 30 miles from Galveston by Highway 6. Friendswood and League City border the city to the northeast, and annual rainfall averages more than 55 inches.

If water, fire or a storm has damaged your property, call (866) 937-3230. Fire & Water Energy is strictly a referral line; we try to match callers with an independent restoration contractor serving Alvin, Pearland, Friendswood and nearby communities, though we can't promise one is free. Wondering what a referral does and does not include? Our how it works and referral disclosure pages cover that plainly.

A record-setting rain history

Claudette's 1979 deluge totaled about 45 inches in 42 hours, and the city has faced extreme rain again since. During Hurricane Harvey in late August 2017, a gauge 1.6 miles southwest of Alvin collected 33.60 inches, and the National Weather Service reported record crests on the Brazos and San Bernard rivers elsewhere in the county. Hurricane Ike also caused enough damage to close the public library for repairs.

Federal disaster declarations covering Brazoria County since 2000 include Tropical Storm Fay and storm flooding in 2002, Hurricane Claudette in 2003, Rita in 2005, Ike in 2008, three storm and flood events in 2015 and 2016, Harvey, the 2021 Severe Winter Storms and Beryl in 2024, plus the 2006 Extreme Wildfire Threat.

Common sources of indoor water damage

Heavy, humid weather keeps air conditioners running most of the year, and a blocked condensate drain can quietly ruin a ceiling. Roofs stressed by tropical winds may leak during the next rain, while water heaters, washing machine hoses and under-sink lines fail in any season. The 2021 winter storm also split pipes in unheated spaces across the region.

A contractor handling water damage restoration in Alvin will typically stop the source, extract water, check hidden areas with moisture meters and run drying equipment until materials are back to normal. Our water damage restoration and ceiling water damage repair pages go further.

Federal disaster declarations that included Brazoria County

FEMA records show Brazoria County was included in 13 major disaster declarations for weather or fire events from 2000 through 2026 (5 hurricane, 3 severe storm, 2 coastal storm, 1 severe ice storm, 1 flood, 1 fire, by FEMA incident type). Declarations are made at the county level, so they do not mean every neighborhood in Alvin was affected. The most recent:

  • 2024 – Hurricane Beryl (DR-4798)
  • 2021 – Severe Winter Storms (DR-4586)
  • 2017 – Hurricane Harvey (DR-4332)
  • 2016 – Severe Storms and Flooding (DR-4272)
  • 2015 – Severe Storms, Tornadoes, Straight-line Winds, and Flooding (DR-4245)
  • 2015 – Severe Storms, Tornadoes, Straight-line Winds and Flooding (DR-4223)

Smoke damage can outlast the fire

Alvin's own library offers an example: while it was being renovated after Ike, a fire broke out and caused major smoke damage, and the building did not reopen until June 2011. In homes, soot and odor travel through HVAC systems and settle into insulation, fabric and drywall well away from where the flames were.

Restoration firms commonly board and secure the structure, remove debris, dry areas soaked by firefighting water, clean residue with methods suited to it and then treat odor. More is on our smoke damage cleanup and fire damage restoration pages.

Floodwater and hurricane cleanup

When rainfall arrives faster than drainage can carry it away, water spreads into streets, garages and living areas. Water from outside is treated as contaminated, so contractors usually pull out wet carpet, pad and the lower part of drywall, then clean and dry the wall cavities before rebuilding.

Hurricanes add wind damage, so tarping roofs and covering broken windows often come first. Learn more about flood damage restoration and hurricane damage cleanup.

Why mold appears so quickly here

With summer highs above 90 degrees and plenty of moisture in the air, mold can colonize wet materials within a day or two. Damp drywall behind furniture, carpet pad and attic decking after a roof leak are frequent trouble spots.

The EPA notes that areas smaller than about 10 square feet can often be cleaned by homeowners after the moisture problem is solved. Larger infestations, hidden growth in walls or ducts, and mold after floodwater usually need mold remediation by trained professionals.

Practical steps for Alvin homeowners

  • Dial 911 for fire, injuries, gas leaks or downed power lines.
  • Watch for storm instructions from the Brazoria County Office of Emergency Management.
  • Turn off the water main for a burst pipe; cut power only when you can do it safely from dry ground.
  • Stay out of floodwater, which can hide open manholes and carry sewage.
  • Document everything with photos and video and save receipts.
  • Coverage depends on your policy; check with your insurer or agent, especially since flood losses are often insured separately from wind.
