Built across the canyons and mesas of the Pajarito Plateau, the community lives with a wildfire and flood cycle that most towns never face. The Cerro Grande Fire started on May 4, 2000 as a prescribed burn at Bandelier National Monument, then escaped in high winds and drought. Afterward, burned slopes shed monsoon rain, and flooding in upper Pueblo Canyon damaged Diamond Drive.

Mesa-top fire risk and the county's disaster declarations
When the Cerro Grande Fire reached town, the townsite's roughly 11,000 residents evacuated on the afternoon of May 10, followed after midnight by White Rock. About 235 homes were destroyed that first evening alone. Residents were not allowed back until May 18.
Los Alamos County has been part of five FEMA major disaster declarations since 2000: the 2000 severe forest fire (DR-1329), flooding in 2011 (DR-4047) and 2012 (DR-4079), severe storms, flooding and mudslides in 2013 (DR-4152), and the 2022 declaration for wildfires, straight-line winds, flooding, mudflows and debris flows (DR-4652).
Soot, smoke and fire damage cleanup
The 2000 fire showed how far smoke damage reaches. At the national laboratory, soot shorted electrical equipment and clogged HEPA filters, and some of those problems took years to fix. In homes, fine soot works into ductwork, electronics, insulation and fabrics even where no flames touched.
A reputable company will usually start with an assessment, remove debris, clean soot with methods suited to each surface and run air scrubbers for odor. Our smoke damage cleanup, soot removal and fire damage restoration pages go further.
Federal disaster declarations that included Los Alamos County
FEMA records show Los Alamos County was included in 5 major disaster declarations for weather or fire events from 2000 through 2026 (3 flood, 2 fire, by FEMA incident type). Declarations are made at the county level, so they do not mean every neighborhood in Los Alamos was affected. The most recent:
- 2022 – Wildfires, Straight-line Winds, Flooding, Mudflows, and Debris Flows (DR-4652)
- 2013 – Severe Storms, Flooding, and Mudslides (DR-4152)
- 2012 – Flooding (DR-4079)
- 2011 – Flooding (DR-4047)
- 2000 – Severe Forest Fire (DR-1329)

Flash floods on burned slopes
Fire can leave soil hydrophobic, meaning it repels water instead of soaking it up. After Cerro Grande, that raised serious concern about flash flooding once the monsoon arrived around July, and a temporary dry dam was built in Pajarito Canyon. The county's later flood declarations in 2011, 2012 and 2013 underline how storms and canyon runoff stay a concern.
Muddy runoff should be treated as contaminated. Flood cleanup typically means removing sediment and soaked materials and disinfecting, and roof or tree damage is covered under storm damage cleanup.
Leaks, freezes and water damage repair in Los Alamos homes
Day to day, most water losses come from plumbing: a split pipe in a cold snap, a failed water heater, a leaking washer hose or snowmelt finding its way under roofing. Water used to fight a fire also soaks floors and walls and needs proper drying.
Contractors who handle water damage restoration in Los Alamos commonly find the source, extract water, measure moisture inside walls and dry the structure before repairs. See water damage repair for more.
Mold after storms and firefighting water
Any material that stays wet for more than a day or two can begin to grow mold, whether the water came from a monsoon storm, a burst pipe or a fire hose. Closed wall cavities and basements dry slowly.
The EPA notes that homeowners can often handle patches under about 10 square feet. Bigger or hidden growth usually calls for mold remediation with containment.
Getting ready and staying safe
- Call 911 for fire, injury or a gas leak, and follow evacuation orders without delay.
- Sign up for county emergency alerts through Everbridge, linked from the Los Alamos County Emergency Management page, and review its Ready, Set, Go! wildfire guidance.
- Build a 72-hour kit, and if someone in the home uses powered medical equipment, register it with the Department of Public Utilities.
- Stay out of canyon bottoms and flowing water during storms.
- Take photos of all damage. Coverage depends on your own policy, so review it with your insurer or agent.

Los Alamos restoration FAQs
Why are floods a concern after a wildfire here?
Burned ground can become hydrophobic and shed rain instead of absorbing it. After the 2000 Cerro Grande Fire, flooding in upper Pueblo Canyon damaged Diamond Drive, a main road through town.
How do I get Los Alamos County emergency alerts?
The county uses Everbridge for emergency notifications, with signup linked from its Emergency Management page. The county website also has an alerts and current conditions page and wildland fire preparation information.
Can smoke damage electronics and HVAC systems?
Yes. During the Cerro Grande Fire, soot shorted electrical equipment and clogged HEPA filters at the laboratory. Have HVAC systems inspected and filters replaced after significant smoke exposure.
Do you take calls from White Rock or Española?
We take calls from White Rock, Española and other nearby communities. Whether an independent contractor can help depends on who covers your address.
