Fire, tornado and water damage help in Yazoo City

Called the Gateway to the Delta, Yazoo City straddles flat Delta land to the west and loess bluffs to the east, right on the banks of the Yazoo River.

Few small Mississippi towns have a disaster history this varied. A 1904 fire leveled most of the town, the 1927 flood ravaged the Delta, and since 2010 multiple tornadoes have crossed the city. Yazoo County has been included in fourteen federal major disaster declarations since 2000.

Where the Delta meets the loess bluffs

The city sits at about 98 feet on the Yazoo River, near Panther Swamp National Wildlife Refuge and roughly 40 miles northwest of Jackson. The Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 did heavy damage across the Delta; Yazoo City recovered and today relies on a flood-prevention system. Rain averages about 60.4 inches a year.

Tornadoes are a recurring threat. On April 24, 2010, an EF4 tornado with a path 1.75 miles wide killed four people in the Yazoo City area. That November 29, two EF2 tornadoes struck, one passing through downtown. On May 2, 2021, a high-end EF1 tornado crossed the southeast side, destroying mobile homes and damaging houses, trees and power lines.

How water gets into Yazoo County homes

Storm damage is a common doorway: a tornado or straight-line wind can lift shingles or drop a tree, and the rain that follows soaks attics and ceilings. In everyday conditions, roof wear, AC condensate overflows during long summers and failing supply lines are frequent causes.

The county was part of winter storm declarations in 2021 and 2026, and the record low is −4°F, so pipes in crawlspaces can freeze. Water damage restoration in Yazoo City generally follows the same order: stop the source, extract, dry and verify, then rebuild. The first two stages are explained under water extraction and structural drying.

Federal disaster declarations that included Yazoo County

FEMA records show Yazoo County was included in 14 major disaster declarations for weather or fire events from 2000 through 2026 (8 severe storm, 3 hurricane, 1 winter storm, 1 severe ice storm, 1 flood, by FEMA incident type). Declarations are made at the county level, so they do not mean every neighborhood in Yazoo City was affected. The most recent:

  • 2026 – Severe Winter Storm (DR-4899)
  • 2023 – Severe Storms, Straight-line Winds, and Tornadoes. (DR-4727)
  • 2021 – Hurricane Ida (DR-4626)
  • 2021 – Severe Winter Storms (DR-4598)
  • 2020 – Severe Storms, Flooding, and Mudslides (DR-4538)
  • 2019 – Severe Storms, Tornadoes, Straight-line Winds, and Flooding (DR-4450)

A town shaped by the fire of 1904

On May 25, 1904, fire destroyed about three-fourths of the town, including most of its homes. A canal finally stopped the spread, sparing the 1872 courthouse and 10 antebellum houses, and rebuilding took nearly two years.

Modern house fires still spread smoke and soot well beyond the burned room. Contractors generally board up, remove debris, dry firefighting water and then clean and deodorize. Our fire damage restoration and smoke damage cleanup pages trace that work from board-up to final odor treatment.

Tornado debris, backwater and flood cleanup

Yazoo County declarations since 2000 include storms with tornadoes and flooding in 2010, 2017, two in 2019, flooding and mudslides in 2020, and a 2023 tornado outbreak, along with 2011 flooding and Hurricanes Katrina (2005), Isaac (2012) and Ida (2021). Roof tarping and tree removal usually have to happen before interior work.

Any floodwater that enters a home is handled as contaminated. Expect removal of wet drywall, pad and insulation, then disinfection and drying. Check our storm damage cleanup and flood cleanup pages.

Keeping mold in check near the Yazoo River

Hot, humid Delta summers mean damp materials can sprout mold within 24 to 48 hours. Attics under storm-damaged roofs and crawlspaces near low ground are the usual problem areas.

The EPA recommends that growth spanning more than about 10 square feet be handled by a professional. A reputable company will contain the work zone, run HEPA filtration and remove what cannot be cleaned. More on mold remediation.

  • Record the damage with photos and video before cleanup, including roof and tree damage outside.

Yazoo City restoration FAQs

How bad was the 2010 Yazoo City tornado?

The April 24, 2010 storm was rated EF4, with a path about 1.75 miles wide. Four people were killed in the Yazoo City area and several were seriously injured. Two more tornadoes, both EF2, hit the area that November.

What caused the 1904 fire?

Wikipedia's account says a boy playing with matches started it, while a witch legend has become part of local folklore. The fire destroyed about three-fourths of the town before a canal halted it.

Is Yazoo City protected from river flooding?

After the Great Mississippi Flood of 1927 damaged much of the Delta, the city came to be protected by a flood-prevention system. No system removes all risk, and heavy local rain can still flood low streets and yards.
