Ruston tornado, ice storm, water and fire damage help

Home to Louisiana Tech and sitting about 312 feet up in north Louisiana, Ruston faces more tornadoes, ice and hard freezes than the coastal parishes do.

Ruston's weather risks look different from those in south Louisiana. The city averages about 55.6 inches of precipitation a year, has recorded temperatures as low as -4°F, and in April 2019 took a direct hit from an EF3 tornado that left roughly three-quarters of the city without power. Lincoln Parish has been part of FEMA declarations for ice storms in 2001 and 2021 and a severe winter storm in 2026.

Fire & Water Energy is a phone-based referral service and does no repair work on its own. Call (866) 937-3230 and we'll try to find an independent restoration contractor that serves Lincoln Parish, based on who is available. To see how that works, visit how it works or the referral disclosure.

Tornado alley meets ice country in Lincoln Parish

Before dawn on April 25, 2019, an EF3 tornado with peak winds of about 145 mph touched down near Lafourche Avenue on the west side of town and tracked roughly 11 miles northeast. More than 100 homes and businesses were damaged, J. C. Love Field at Louisiana Tech was destroyed, and two people died when a tree fell on their house. FEMA's 2019 severe storms and tornadoes declaration for Lincoln Parish followed.

Winter matters too. Besides the 2001, 2021 and 2026 winter declarations, the parish was included in declarations for Katrina and Rita (2005), Gustav (2008), Isaac (2012), a 2016 flood event, Laura and Delta (2020) and Ida (2021), as tropical systems often carry heavy rain and wind well inland.

Split pipes, roof punctures and water damage repair

Frozen pipes are a bigger concern here than along the coast. Lines in exterior walls, crawlspaces and attics can split during a hard freeze, then spray water once things thaw. Tornado and wind damage also punctures roofs and breaks windows, letting rain soak insulation and ceilings for days if repairs are delayed.

Fire and smoke concerns in a historic college town

More than fifteen downtown buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places, and older landmarks include the 1886 Kidd-Davis house and the Dixie Theater, opened in 1928. Older wiring and materials can make fire damage harder to recover from, and winter brings extra fire risk from space heaters and fireplaces.

A typical restoration contractor will stabilize the structure, remove burned debris, clean soot from surfaces and contents, and treat odor. See fire damage cleanup and smoke damage cleanup for an outline of the process.

Storm debris, fallen trees and flood cleanup

The 2019 tornado showed how quickly falling trees can turn a roof into an open hole. After wind events, contractors commonly tarp roofs and board openings before drying the interior. When heavy rain from a tropical system or spring storm sends water indoors, porous materials it reached are often removed and the space disinfected before drying.

Mold after spring storms and summer humidity

Ruston's summers are hot, with typical highs near 92°F in July and August, and humidity stays high through much of the warm season. Wet insulation left in a damaged attic or a soaked crawlspace can grow mold within days, especially during power outages like the one after the 2019 tornado.

EPA guidance treats patches under about 10 square feet as something a protected homeowner can often clean. Larger areas or growth inside walls or ducts is better handled by a professional. Read about mold removal.

Immediate safety moves for Ruston residents

  • Call 911 for fire, injuries, gas leaks or downed lines across a home.
  • Follow National Weather Service Shreveport warnings and Lincoln Parish emergency guidance during severe weather.
  • After a freeze, locate the main water shutoff before thawing pipes.
  • Take dated pictures of every damaged room and item before hauling anything to the curb, and hold on to receipts. Coverage depends on your policy, so contact your insurer or agent.
  • Use gloves, sturdy boots and eye protection around broken glass, nails and debris.
