Founded in 1779 and incorporated in 1839, the Iberia Parish seat is one of the older towns in Acadiana, about 21 miles southeast of Lafayette. Its rainfall runs near 60 inches a year, and the surrounding lakes and low country have pushed water into the city during at least one major hurricane.
Fire & Water Energy is a referral service, and we try to pair callers with an independent contractor who serves New Iberia. Our number is (866) 937-3230; we cannot promise a provider is open, as that depends on companies in the area. The how it works page and referral disclosure describe the process.
Bayou Teche country: hurricanes, a 2022 tornado and heavy rain
When Hurricane Ike passed in September 2008, nearby lakes overflowed and the city flooded under several feet of water, according to Wikipedia. On December 14, 2022, an EF2 tornado heavily damaged the southeastern part of the city and injured 16 people. Precipitation averages about 59.7 inches spread over nearly 130 days a year.
FEMA has included Iberia Parish in declarations for Gustav (2008), a 2011 flood, Isaac (2012), a 2016 flood, Tropical Storm Harvey (2017), Barry (2019), Laura and Delta (2020), Zeta and Ida (2021) and the 2021 winter storms. The area also carries an unusual history: the 1980 Lake Peigneur disaster turned a 10-foot-deep freshwater lake into a saltwater lake about 1,300 feet deep.
Water damage repair, from old plumbing to winter freezes
A city incorporated in 1839 has homes of many vintages, and plumbing in the oldest ones may have been patched and extended several times. Roof leaks after strong storms, failing water heaters and AC condensate overflows are frequent sources of interior water.
Cold snaps are rare but can be severe: the record low here is 2 degrees. Pipes in exterior walls and crawlspaces are most vulnerable. Water damage restoration in New Iberia generally follows the same steps anywhere: shut off the source, extract water, then dry the structure while checking moisture readings. Our write-ups on split pipes and drying a structure describe that in plain terms.
Federal disaster declarations that included Iberia Parish
FEMA records show Iberia Parish was included in 17 major disaster declarations for weather or fire events from 2000 through 2026 (13 hurricane, 2 flood, 1 severe ice storm, 1 coastal storm, by FEMA incident type). Declarations are made at the county level, so they do not mean every neighborhood in New Iberia was affected. The most recent:
- 2021 – Hurricane Ida (DR-4611)
- 2021 – Severe Winter Storms (DR-4590)
- 2021 – Hurricane Zeta (DR-4577)
- 2020 – Hurricane Delta (DR-4570)
- 2020 – Hurricane Laura (DR-4559)
- 2019 – Hurricane Barry (DR-4458)

Fire and smoke in historic and modern homes
The East Main Street Historic District is on the National Register, and older homes there and across town may have plaster, original wood floors or trim that call for careful handling after a fire. Smoke odor soaks into porous materials and spreads through ducts no matter the building's age.
A contractor will usually secure the property, remove burned debris, clean soot with methods suited to each surface and deodorize. Ask how they plan to protect original finishes. Bayou Teche homeowners can find the general sequence on our fire restoration and soot pages.
Lake overflow, tornado damage and storm cleanup
Floodwater from overflowing lakes, the bayou or storm runoff is treated as contaminated. Standard cleanup includes removing wet drywall above the water line, pulling carpet and pad, disinfecting framing and drying before rebuilding.
Tornadoes and hurricane winds leave torn roofs, shattered windows and trees on houses, which can let rain in for days. Quick tarping or board-up limits the damage. Pages on floodwater cleanup and wind and storm damage go into detail.
Acadiana humidity and mold growth
A wet room in this climate can show mold in a few days, especially in closed closets and behind furniture against exterior walls. Start drying as soon as it is safe and remove soaked items you can lift.
The EPA says homeowners can usually clean small areas under about 10 square feet with proper protection; larger infestations or mold after floodwater should go to a professional using containment. Our mold remediation page explains the process.
Safety and documentation for New Iberia residents
- Call 911 for fire, gas leaks, injuries or anyone in danger from rising water.
- Follow Iberia Parish emergency instructions and National Weather Service Lafayette-area forecasts from the Lake Charles office.
- When a tornado warning is issued, get to a windowless inner room downstairs and stay there until it expires.
- Record damage with photos and video before cleanup. Each policy differs, so confirm coverage with your insurer or agent; flood is commonly a separate policy.
- Ask contractors for written estimates and whether permits are needed for historic properties.

New Iberia restoration FAQs
Has New Iberia flooded during hurricanes?
Yes. During Hurricane Ike in 2008, nearby lakes overflowed and the city flooded under several feet of water. FEMA has also included Iberia Parish in declarations for many other storms and floods since then.
Do tornadoes hit New Iberia?
They can. An EF2 tornado heavily damaged the southeastern part of the city on December 14, 2022, injuring 16 people. Wind damage to roofs often leads to water damage inside if it isn't covered quickly.
Does restoring an older home near East Main Street work differently?
It may. Older materials like plaster and original wood trim are often worth saving and need different cleaning and drying methods. Ask contractors about their experience with older homes and check whether repairs need any local review.
