Bainbridge help after hurricanes, leaks, fires and mold

Bainbridge, the Decatur County seat on the Flint River, took widespread damage from Hurricane Michael in October 2018, and its homes remain exposed to Gulf storms, heavy rain and the steady humidity of southwest Georgia.

Bainbridge calls itself "Georgia's First Inland Port." The city sits on the Flint River at about 121 feet above sea level, upstream from where the Flint meets the Chattahoochee at Lake Seminole and becomes the Apalachicola, which carries barge traffic to the Gulf of Mexico. Decatur County's seat since 1824, it had about 14,500 residents in 2020, roughly 42 miles northwest of Tallahassee.

For leaks, storm damage, smoke or mold, you can call (866) 937-3230. Fire & Water Energy handles referrals and nothing else: we try to connect Bainbridge callers with an independent restoration contractor serving southwest Georgia, and that business sets its own availability and prices. Our how it works and referral disclosure pages describe the arrangement.

Hurricane Michael and the Gulf storm track

On October 10, 2018, Hurricane Michael struck Bainbridge, causing widespread damage within city limits: fallen trees, downed power lines and structural damage, with many residents left with severely damaged homes. FEMA declared a major disaster covering Decatur County (DR-4400).

Michael was not the first or last. Decatur County's FEMA declarations since 2000 also include severe storms and tornadoes in 2000 (DR-1315), Tropical Storm Frances in 2004 (DR-1560), severe storms, flooding, tornadoes and straight-line winds in 2009 (DR-1833), severe storms and flooding in 2016 (DR-4259), Hurricane Irma in 2017 (DR-4338) and Hurricane Helene in 2024 (DR-4830). Seven declarations in about 25 years show how often Gulf and severe weather systems reach this corner of the state.

Interior leaks and water damage repair

In a hot, humid climate, air conditioning runs for much of the year, and clogged condensate lines or rusted drain pans are a common cause of ceiling stains and wet floors. Failed water heaters, toilet supply lines and appliance hoses are other everyday sources. Roofs weakened by past storms can let wind-driven rain in during the next one.

When you need water damage restoration in Bainbridge, expect a contractor to stop the source, remove standing water, check walls and subfloors with moisture meters and dry the structure before repairs. See water damage restoration and water damage repair.

Federal disaster declarations that included Decatur County

FEMA records show Decatur County was included in 7 major disaster declarations for weather or fire events from 2000 through 2026 (4 hurricane, 3 severe storm, by FEMA incident type). Declarations are made at the county level, so they do not mean every neighborhood in Bainbridge was affected. The most recent:

  • 2024 – Hurricane Helene (DR-4830)
  • 2018 – Hurricane Michael (DR-4400)
  • 2017 – Hurricane Irma (DR-4338)
  • 2016 – Severe Storms and Flooding (DR-4259)
  • 2009 – Severe Storms, Flooding, Tornadoes, and Straight-line Winds (DR-1833)
  • 2004 – Tropical Storm Frances (DR-1560)

Fire and smoke recovery

Kitchen fires, dryer vents and electrical faults are leading causes of house fires. After hurricanes, generators run close to homes and candles fill in for lights, both of which raise the danger of fire and carbon monoxide. Smoke residue can spread well beyond the room where a fire began.

A reputable fire restoration company will usually board up and secure the structure, remove debris, clean soot from surfaces and belongings and deodorize. More on fire damage restoration on our service page.

Flooding, fallen trees and storm cleanup on the Flint

Living along a major river means heavy, prolonged rain deserves attention; Decatur County's 2009 and 2016 declarations both involved flooding. Hurricane-force winds like Michael's can also bring large trees down across roofs, opening the house to rain for days before repairs can begin.

Treat river water and outdoor runoff as contaminated. Contractors offering hurricane damage cleanup and flood damage restoration commonly tarp roofs, remove debris and soaked materials, sanitize and dry the framing.

Mold in southwest Georgia's humidity

Long, humid summers and storms that knock out power for days create ideal conditions for mold. Drywall, insulation and furniture left wet without air conditioning can show growth within a couple of days.

For mold covering more than about 10 square feet, EPA guidance favors trained professionals over do-it-yourself cleanup. A qualified mold remediation contractor will set up containment, remove affected materials, use HEPA filtration and resolve the moisture source.

Bainbridge safety and recovery checklist

  • Call 911 for fire, smoke, gas odors, injuries or downed lines.
  • Register for emergency notifications through Nixle, which the City of Bainbridge links from its website.
  • The city provides water, sewer and gas service; report problems through the city utilities page, and leave immediately if you smell gas.
  • Keep any portable generator outside in open air, never in a garage or carport attached to the house.
  • Document damage with photos before cleanup. Coverage depends on your policy, and wind and flood are often handled separately, so check with your insurer or agent.
