Rayne took shape in the 1880s when the railroad arrived. It was first called Pouppeville and later renamed for a Southern Pacific engineer. Today the town covers about 3.8 square miles at roughly 30 feet above sea level, known for its Frog Festival and the murals that earned it the title Louisiana City of Murals. Open farmland on every side leaves it exposed to strong winds from spring storms and tropical systems.

Tornadoes, tropical winds and rain on the Acadia prairie
On March 5, 2011, an EF2 tornado tore through Rayne, according to Wikipedia, injuring at least twelve people, killing one, leveling homes and causing natural gas leaks that forced evacuations. Nine years later, the National Weather Service in Lake Charles listed Acadia Parish among the parishes where Hurricane Laura's winds and falling trees damaged homes, and Hurricane Delta followed weeks after with 12 to 18 inches of rain across central and southwest Louisiana.
Acadia Parish FEMA declarations since 2006 also include severe storms and flooding in 2006, 2013 and 2016, Hurricanes Gustav and Ike (2008), Isaac (2012), Tropical Storm Harvey (2017), Hurricane Zeta and Hurricane Ida (2021) and the 2021 Severe Winter Storms.
Indoor water problems and how they're dried out
Wind damage is a leading way water gets inside here: lifted shingles, torn flashing and blown-off tarps let rain into attics and ceilings. Other frequent sources include burst supply lines, worn water heaters, leaking dishwashers and AC drain lines that back up during the long humid season. The 2021 winter storm declaration is a reminder that pipes can also freeze.
Rayne had about 3,460 housing units as of 2019. For water damage restoration in Rayne, a reputable contractor will usually stop the water, extract it, open up wet cavities if necessary and dry the structure while recording moisture readings. Federal disaster declarations that included Acadia Parish
FEMA records show Acadia Parish was included in 16 major disaster declarations for weather or fire events from 2000 through 2026 (11 hurricane, 3 severe storm, 1 severe ice storm, 1 flood, by FEMA incident type). Declarations are made at the county level, so they do not mean every neighborhood in Rayne was affected. The most recent:
- 2021 – Hurricane Ida (DR-4611)
- 2021 – Severe Winter Storms (DR-4590)
- 2021 – Hurricane Zeta (DR-4577)
- 2020 – Hurricane Delta (DR-4570)
- 2020 – Hurricane Laura (DR-4559)
- 2017 – Tropical Storm Harvey (DR-4345)

Fire, smoke and gas-leak hazards
The 2011 tornado showed how storm damage can rupture gas lines, which is why any smell of gas means leaving the house and calling for help before thinking about repairs. When a fire does occur, soot spreads well past the burned area, and firefighting water soaks what the flames didn't reach.
Contractors commonly secure the building, remove debris, clean soot and treat odors. Learn more on fire damage cleanup and smoke damage cleanup.
Storm debris, roof tarps and flood cleanup
After a tornado or hurricane, the first job is often getting the roof covered and debris cleared so rain stops coming in. When heavy rain floods low spots, outside water is treated as contaminated, so soaked drywall, carpet and insulation usually come out before the framing is sanitized and dried.
See our storm damage cleanup and flood cleanup pages.
Mold risk in rice-country humidity
In south Louisiana's warm, damp air, wet materials grow mold quickly, often within a few days, and roof leaks that go unnoticed in an attic are a common source. Watch for stains on ceilings, musty closets and warped trim.
The EPA says homeowners can generally clean mold patches smaller than about 10 square feet with protective gear; larger or contaminated areas are better handled by a professional who sets up containment. Read about mold remediation.
Rayne safety checklist after a storm or fire
- Call 911 for fire, injuries, gas leaks or downed power lines.
- Watch National Weather Service Lake Charles warnings and Acadia Parish emergency updates.
- If you smell gas, leave the house first and report it from outside.
- Photograph every damaged area before cleanup and keep receipts. Coverage depends on your policy, so contact your insurer or agent; flood is usually a separate policy.
- Wear gloves, boots and an N95 mask around debris, soot or mold.
